Top Tips To Ensuring Your New Employer Is The Right Culture Fit For You

Published 23rd Feb 2022

The Importance of Culture Fit

So you have been approached about a role or you have seen an advert for a job that excites you.

How do you find out if that organisation matches your values and the environment that meets your needs?

There are a number of ways to do this and we would recommend;

Do your research

Look at Glassdoor, Indeed and Google to see what current and previous employees say. Remember though, not everyone loves a business and the role you may be going for might be totally different to the roles that the reviewers are describing! Read it, reflect and make it part of your understanding, look for general trends and take parts of it with a pinch of salt.

During the interview

Ask questions that are important to you, ask who will be managing you, refer back to comments on Glassdoor and give them a chance to explain the reviews and see what their reaction is like. Remember you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you, don’t be afraid to be curious, changing jobs is a big decision.

Speaking to Colleagues

Ask to speak to your future colleagues; ask to spend some time with people currently doing your role or in a similar team. Chat with them and ask curious questions about why they enjoy working there, how long they have been there and why they think it is a great place to work.

Company Values

Understand their values; Look at the company website and review the section about the company. Do they have values, are they meaningful and are they obvious when you visit their premises. What are the pictures like, are they on social media? Do they celebrate success, have they won any awards? You can get a preview of what the office looks like as many have images on their website.

Social Media

Checkout the social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok and LinkedIn. Viewing their recent posts on their social sites can give you an understanding of the company’s activities, team days, general culture, published content and latest news coverage.

Reflect

Write down how you felt at the interview and afterwards; especially if you have had a number of interviews. Reflect – will I thrive and be challenged? Question yourself “Do I fit in here? How friendly were the team? Did people look engaged?
